Unit Camp 2010 Reflections

Let us take this time to make ourselves comfortable while we reflect on the experiences we faced in recent times. Why am I writing in a blog then? Because I'm convinced that by writing down my thoughts, I'll be able to do better in essays.

Yet another milestone has passed, and will always be remembered in our hearts. The greatest event of the June Holidays - the Unit Camp has successfully managed to blow the hearts of our cadets and at the same time, create an intimate bonding between us yet again.

DAY 1

0700 hrs. Earliest time to reach school yet -- in the holidays. Eyes were barely open and muscles were sore

0730 hrs. Saw the batch of Sec1s and 2s falling in in squad form, then split into the 8 tribes. My adrenaline was pumped, the excited and ecstatic expressions on those faces perked me up. Immediately, I grabbed onto the Buddie's Guide and zoomed to my group.

At first, they were like "Huh? Who is this? A random Sec3?" I hope that wasn't the case, but all my mind was concentrating on the various ways to make sure they enjoy this camp, and that it was fulfilling their expectations.

0800 hrs. The first briefing of the day. "The dancer"...I didn't expect that. It was meant to be a private hobby. "Migrated from Island Wangapore", my group was like "Ohh... the URA guy". Video was an interesting one, iMovie really is a good software for the com. Briefing was somewhat detailed, at least now they knew that THIS IS MADNESS CUZ' THIS IS WAR.

Group status at the moment: "Shy and unfamiliar".

0830 hrs. Ice breakers were carried out. Style of games was cool - War theme maintained. Games were a bit too subjected to a process called elimination, excluded those that were eliminated early, resulting in loneliness and left out. Best game was probably DodgeBall because in simplest terms to put, I love balls and games with balls included.

0900?? hrs. Mass Ice Breaker session ended, with gay couples finally being produced and born. Kidding. Resource Gathering, another individual group activity was carried out. First station "Paper through Hoops", game is somewhat cool, but dry run was cooler. Name could have been changed to "Fire in the Hole!!" though.

Next activity was Water Crisis. A fairly kind and caring station master who gave us chances to work together. If he had started whacking balls at us, I don't think the objectives of Unit Camp would have been achieved.
A very famous saying states:"Only through very hard times, do men lie their shoulders on each other and go through with them the good and bad times together". Otherwise, don't do it.

Many other activities were carried out. Finally after eating our rations and gathering our resources, we headed on designing our Flag and Uniform. Given the very limited resources that were provided(more specifically, many resources, but most of no use), we managed to produce a uniform of an above average standard and a flag, that signified the moral of our tribe/team, which was "One for All, All for One"

Wash up was the most interesting event ever. Stripped naked in the toilet and took a shower-Not in a cubicle but in the open. With Darren. I feel that we as HCI boys should treat each other as fellow comrades and not gay partners. So what if there are unsightly happenings or disturbing scenes? Even in a public swimming pool do people strip naked, and end up being called a brave person rather than a flasher.

After which was the Movie Screening. Hope it was an enjoyable movie that got into the mood for the Secondary 1s to proceed on to their SoloNite. I personally wasn't there for half the movie, but at the same time from the debrief that was ongoing, response from the cadets were quite enthusiastic and willing to cooperate with their "leaders".

Reflections for myself: Be a Buddy who has more initiative. Instead of sweeping my group to move faster at the back, lead them at the front with the encouragement they need. Although I was doing my best to get myself involved in the activities as much as possible, I guess I overdid it. Again, although my teammates did not complain, I personally felt sorry for not giving the chances to them to participate.

Goals for 2nd day: Ensure team is even more bonded together(which did eventually succeed right after the game Honor at Stake). Everyone has fun!!

DAY 2

The dawn started off with a morning jog, or should I say the most painful jog I ever experienced in my entire lifetime. The warmups, to me, were definitely not enough. All that was done was the stretching of muscles. How about the rib cage, lungs and stomach which were the most crucial organs for running?

Even if things go bad, I shall not falter and finally pulled myself through the run, with stopping on once.

***To be continued tomorrow***
